What is eye plastics?

Eye plastics, or oculoplastics, is a subspecialty of ophthalmology (eye surgery) encompassing a wide variety of surgical procedures on the gross anatomical structures surrounding the eye.  These structures include the orbit (eye socket), eyelids, tear ducts, and upper face.  An oculoplastic surgeon has completed medical school, ophthalmology residency, and oculoplastics fellowship.  A certified oculoplastic surgeon has completed a two-year fellowship sponsored by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), and has become a member of this society by completing written and oral board examinations following fellowship.
